Billy Vunipola says he was fined 240 euros (£205) after being arrested and charged following the incident in Mallorca on Sunday.

Reports on Monday morning said the 31-year-old policeman was attacked twice after arriving at a bar in the island’s capital, Palma, early Sunday morning.

Saracens have launched an internal investigation into the matter and Vunipola says he is returning to the UK on Monday.

Sky Sports News Images of Vunipola’s involvement in the incident on Sunday night have been obtained.

After his club tweeted that they were aware of the investigation, they released a statement on Vunipola’s behalf, which read: “I can confirm that I was involved in an unfortunate misunderstanding when I left the club in Mallorca on Sunday. Kai.

“Contrary to media reports, there was no violence, no fighting and I did not threaten anyone at any stage, with bottles or chairs or anything else.

“I was charged with defying the law and after an ‘express trial’, I paid a fine of 240 euros. The Spanish police investigation is now closed and I am returning to the UK today (Monday).

“I will certainly co-operate with Saracens’ internal process and apologize unreservedly for any inconvenience to all involved.”

Saracens’ earlier tweet said they would deal with the matter internally.

The statement read: “Saracens are aware of the incident involving Billy Vunipola in Majorca.

“We will of course deal with this incident internally and will not be making any further comment until then.”

Vunipola is expected to leave Saracens at the end of the season and has previously been linked with a move to France – although nothing has been confirmed.

He made his Test debut against Argentina in 2013 and has won 75 England caps. He is currently not part of the England squad.

The player made a second-half substitute appearance for Saracens in their 15-12 win over Bath on Friday night.

The club is not scheduled to play again until May 11.

Saracens are currently second in the Gallagher Premiership and chasing a sixth league title in the last 10 seasons – with just two rounds of regular season fixtures remaining before the play-offs.
