3854 women went missing in Uttarakhand in two and a half years, maximum cases came from Udham Singh Nagar, revealed through RTI

Nizamuddin Sheikh, Udham Singh Nagar/Dehradun: In less than two and a half years, 3854 women and 1134 girls have gone missing in Uttarakhand. According to the data, 2961 missing women and 1042 girls have also been recovered. The police headquarters has provided this information to Right to Information activist Nadeem Uddin. No matter how many claims are made about women’s safety and women’s rights protection in Uttarakhand, the reality seems far from it. In Uttarakhand, 3854 women and 1134 girls have been reported missing in 29 months from January 2021 to May 2023. During this period, 2961 missing women and 1042 girls have also been recovered. This shocking disclosure was made by Right to Information activist Nadeemuddin to the police.

Right to Information activist Nadeem Uddin, a resident of Kashipur in Udham Singh Nagar district of Uttarakhand, had sought information from the Public Information Officer of Uttarakhand Police Headquarters about the data of missing persons, women, boys and girls in Uttarakhand. In response to this, Police Headquarters’ Public Information Officer/Additional Superintendent of Police (Personnel) Shahjahan Javed Khan gave this information.

According to this information, a total of 3854 women have been registered missing in 13 districts of Uttarakhand and Railways (under GRP) from January 2021 to May 2023. These include 1494 women in 2021, 1632 in 2022 and 728 women in 2023 till May. A total of 1132 girls have been reported missing during the same period. These include 404 girls in 2021, 425 in 2022 and 305 girls in 2023 till May.

According to the data of recovery of missing women available to Nadeem, a total of 2961 women have been recovered from January 2021 to May 2023. This includes 1271 women in 2021, 1281 in 2022 and 409 women in 2023 till May. A total of 1042 missing girls have been recovered during the same period, which includes 393 girls in 2021, 403 in 2022 and 246 girls in 2023 till May.

According to the district wise details of missing women, 168 women have gone missing in Nainital district in 2021, 165 in 2022 and 53 in 2023 till May. 343, 415, 183 respectively in Udham Singh Nagar district. Apart from this, 14, 18 and 7 in Pithoragarh district. 25, 44 and 23 in Almora district, 59, 49 and 35 in Tehri district. 34, 26 and 12 in Bageshwar district. 43, 58 and 19 in Pauri district.

34, 23 and 15 women in Uttarkashi district, 364 in Dehradun district in the year 2021, 430 in the year 2022 and 163 women in the year 2023, 339, 314 and 169 respectively in Haridwar district, 31, 26 and 14 in Chamoli, Champawat district. 23, 48 and 25, 14, 15 and 10 missing women have been registered in Rudraprayag district and 3 in Railway area (under GRP) in the year 2021, 1 in 2022 and zero till May in 2023.

According to the district wise details of missing girls, 74 girls have been reported missing in Nainital district in 2021, 63 in 2022, 17 girls have been reported missing till May in 2023, while in Udham Singh Nagar district 133, 146 and 49 respectively, in Pithoragarh 17, 22 and 15, 10, 13 and 9 in Almora district, 23, 18 and 12 in Tehri district, 8, 8 and 2 in Bageshwar district, 5, 8 and 7 in Pauri district, 5, 3 and 2 in Uttarkashi district, 5, 3 and 2 in Dehradun district. 30 girls have been reported missing in 2021, 9 in 2022 and 80 girls till May in 2023. 81, 103 and 95 respectively in Haridwar district, 8, 9 and 5 in Chamoli district, 9, 17 and 8 in Champawat district, 1, 6 and 3 in Rudraprayag district, in Railway Zone (GRP) during this period. Only 1 girl child has been reported missing till May in 2023.
