The new contracts for 2024-25 don’t go into effect until July 1. Australia will not play much T20 cricket in the contract year of 2024-25, with only six matches scheduled. Australia’s focus is on seven Tests against India at home (five) and Sri Lanka (two) as they hope to qualify for the 2025 World Test Championship finals and the ODI Champions Trophy in Pakistan in February.
Chairman of selectors George Bailey said the list had been put together with an eye to the future.
“Matt, Aaron and Xavier have been very impressive in the early stages of their international careers,” he said. “His performances and the way he has embraced the international stage have been exciting to watch.
“The committee believes he has a strong future and deserves his contracts as he strives to become a regular in the Australian set-up.”
Players not under contract for 2024-25 still have a chance to qualify for upgrades. Eight players, including Hardy, Ellis, David, Short, Matthew Wade, Tanveer Sangha, Jason Behrendorff and Spencer Johnson, qualified for upgrades last year by scoring enough points through selection. Players need 12 points to upgrade. Five points are awarded for Test match, two for ODI and two for T20.
