New Delhi: Who says there can’t be a hole in the sky?
Put your heart in whatever you do

These lines of Dushyant Kumar have been embodied by Asha Sharma, living in Sonia Vihar area of North-East Delhi. 25-year-old Asha appeared for the UPSC exam in the EWS category and secured 378th rank. Asha lives in a place in Delhi where there are not even basic facilities. There are unpaved roads nearby. There are no sewer-water connections. They have to struggle to reach home from the main road. In such a situation, many people used to taunt the family members even when they taught me. But hope has changed the direction of the winds. What does she say about this journey of her own, let us know from her…Question: Why chose UPSC?
answer :
Where we come from, girls are kept more at home. Marriage takes place after graduation. Only teaching is done in the name of job. I have a sister and a brother. Mom and dad taught us without caring about the society. People used to tell him why he was teaching so much to girls. After this, Didi got a job as a teacher in Kendriya Vidyalaya, then people started talking less. It was said to me that after teaching so much, will you make the younger one a collector? Now I will definitely get IPS as per my rank. But the situation of the society is still such that even after the result, some people were saying that it is not right for the girl to go to the police line. This was the choice to change this thinking and environment.

Question: How to prepare?
answer :
I took classes from YouTube. Took the remaining test sets also, but did not take any preparation from any coaching. Did B.Com Honors from Ambedkar College, Delhi University (DU). Started preparation for the exam from May 2019. I gave my first attempt in 2021, but could not pass my pre in 2021 and 2022. After this, he cleared the exam in 2023 by securing 378th rank.

Question: How did you motivate yourself after not pre-qualifying twice in a row?
answer :
I was very disappointed when pre did not come out even after the second attempt. The condition was such that she did not go to the room to study for a week. But somewhere in my mind there was still something missing. Thought we would complete it this time. If I am not cleared even after giving my 100 percent, I will not give the exam after the third attempt. But achieved this rank only in third.

Question: There is controversy every year on Hindi/English medium of UPSC, what do you think on this?
answer :
For the last few years, there has been a system that you can give mains and interview in different languages. My optional subject was sociology. I wrote Mains in English, but gave the interview in Hindi only. I studied from a government school located in Shakti Nagar. The problem of many children like us is that despite being English medium, we find English easy to write, but face difficulty in speaking. Earlier I had thought that I would give the interview in English only, but I felt that there would be no language barrier, so I gave the interview in Hindi only. Hindi speaking people face some problem because the means of preparation are not so easily available.

Question: What advice would you give to the students preparing?
answer :
There are always ups and downs during preparation. In such a situation, be patient and trust yourself. Keep working on yourself. There is benefit in giving exam with positive thinking. In UPSC, questions come on a fixed pattern, whoever understands it, the exam will not be difficult for him. While giving the paper, one has to keep in mind which questions are to be left immediately. Many times such questions are deliberately included in CSAT due to which children get troubled and remain entangled in them. Therefore, the questions which do not come should be left immediately and move ahead. Previous years’ question papers help a lot in preparation. Studying 7-8 hours a day is a lot. Along with studies, sleeping is also very important. I did not compromise with sleep at all. Used to sleep for 8 hours every day. Many students think that they will pass by studying a few days before the exam or will find ways to pass, but this does not happen.

Question: What tips will you give for interview?
answer :
It is very important to read the Detailed Application Form (DAF) which is filled for interview and current affairs properly. Instead of running after more coaching institutes, prepare your DAF form well. There are many videos on YouTube, you can also prepare by watching them.
