Rishabh Pant has been named in India’s squad for the T20 World Cup, 16 months after he was involved in a fatal car accident.
In December 2022, Pant underwent plastic surgery with facial injuries after a clash in northern India.
He returned to competitive cricket last month, captaining Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League and scoring 398 runs in 11 innings at a strike rate of 158.56.
Pant was one of two wicketkeepers selected along with Sanju Samson, who made his first World Cup squad at the age of 29.
KL Rahul, who was India’s wicketkeeper in last year’s 50-over World Cup, has no place in the squad but has not played a T20 international since the 2022 T20 World Cup.
All-rounder Shivam Dubey, who was recalled from India last August after two years, has also made the squad, while Rinku Singh has been overlooked despite playing India’s recent T20Is.
Wrist-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, the only bowler in IPL history to take 200 wickets, was a surprise inclusion as he was not used when India hosted the 50-over World Cup last year. Chahal has taken 13 wickets in nine IPL matches in 2024.
India have picked three more spinners in their 15-man squad, including left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav and left-arm spin all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel.
Star batsmen Virat Kohli and captain Rohit Sharma have also been confirmed as part of the squad for the tournament in the Caribbean and the United States in June.
Sharma and Kohli have been in good form in the IPL. Kohli tops the list with 500 runs in 10 innings including a hundred and four fifties. Sharma has scored 311 runs in nine matches at a strike rate of 160.30.
Nine of the 15-man squad were in the 2022 T20 World Cup, where India lost to eventual champions England in the semi-finals.
India begin their 2024 campaign against Ireland on June 5. They will also play Pakistan, tournament host USA and Canada.
India T20 World Cup Squad: Rohit Sharma (C), Jasprit Bumrah, Yuzvendra Chahal, Shivam Dubey, Ravindra Jadeja, Yassavi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant, Axar Patel, Sanju Samson, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammad Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav, Suryakumar Yadav
