Ronnie O’Sullivan hailed the impact of intermittent fasting on his energy levels after watching Ryan Day reach the quarter-finals at this year’s World Snooker Championship.

The 48-year-old, bidding to claim a record eighth Crucible crown, cruised into the last eight on Monday afternoon by wrapping up a 13-7 victory over Welshman Day after winning three of four frames.

O’Sullivan revealed that the challenge of negotiating a 17-day marathon in Sheffield was made easier by intermittent fasting, with Englishmen going without food for around 16 hours before breaking the fast in an attempt to boost their energy.

He said: “I do what’s right for me. It’s not like I sit down with somebody and work out what’s right, what’s wrong and how to peak. A lot of people think I do. What I’m doing is I try to eat right. . I’m doing intermittent fasting for this tournament because it’s for me. Gives more power.

“I do certain things and that doesn’t mean I’m going to win, I need every little advantage I can get at this stage. It’s a tournament of endurance, stamina and concentration. For me, intermittent fasting gives me a little more energy.

“After the tournament, I go back to eating 24 hours a day. There are times when you work out what works for you. I go into a period of time where I don’t eat and it’s amazing energy. You get that, I’ve always found that works well for me.

O’Sullivan revealed that he first discovered the benefits of intermittent fasting after periods of illness.

She said: “I was sick and the only way to relax my stomach was to not eat. My nutritionist said ‘the only thing you can do is not eat’ but obviously you have to eat. I was doing that and I went ‘you know what, I love this, this Worked for me’ I thought.

“It’s 16 (hours) at the moment, sometimes 17. I try to stop at around 7 but it’s hard when you’re playing matches. Last night at 8.30 so I didn’t eat until about 12.20 today. It’s great, I’m 48 years old and I’m more Eating makes me really slow.

“Animals in the wild go days without food and suddenly they get hungry, get their prey and digest it for a while. They don’t have three meals a day, they only eat when you eat. Hungry and sometimes give your body a rest that works for me anyway.

O’Sullivan’s quarter-finals, played in best of 25 frames, begin in Tuesday’s afternoon session and conclude on Wednesday. The semi-finals are best of 33 frames and run from Thursday, with the final best of 35 and starting from Sunday.
