Madrid Open: Britain’s Cameron Norrie knocked out by Casper Rudd from Madrid Open; Rafael Nadal wins again Tennis news


Britain’s Cam Norrie has crashed out of the Madrid Masters after a third-round loss to Casper Rudd, but Rafael Nadal survived a scare to win an epic three-hour set against Pedro Cachin.

Norway’s Rudd cruised to a 6-2 opening set success in just 31 minutes, breaking Norrie three times as the Brit struggled to deal with the power he faced.

The second set proved to be more as Norrie achieved a break of first serve, only for Rudd to quickly respond and then break Norrie for a second time, reversing the momentum for an impressive 6-2 6-4 win in the Spanish capital.

In front of an adoring home support, Nadal defeated Argentina’s Cachin 6-1 6-7 6-3, recovering from a second-set tiebreak loss to win a decisive third set.

Rudd will face Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime in the last 16, while Nadal will face Czech Republic’s Jiri Lehka.

Highlights Rafael Nadal produced an entertaining victory over Pedro Cachin who won the match after three hours.

“I had good moments, some bad moments. I somehow found a way to deal with it,” Nadal said afterwards.

“In the third set, even with some mistakes, I was able to react unexpectedly and that changed the match. I’m enjoying the game, let’s see how I wake up tomorrow.

“Playing at home means everything to me. Tomorrow is another day to dream and play in front of this amazing crowd, which means everything to me.”

Top-seeded Janic Sinner Not at his best but had enough to beat Pavel Kotov 6-2, 7-5. Sinner, who has been dealing with a hip problem, will face 16th seed Karen Khachanov.

“I’ve been struggling a little bit with my right hip,” Sinner said. “We’re trying to find a solution and I don’t think it’s anything serious. Sometimes I feel more like today and some days are a little better.”

World No. 4 Daniel Medvedev Dropped the first set against American Sebastian Korda but won 5-7 7-6 (4) 6-3.

He faces Alexander Bublik The Kazakhstani defeated American Ben Shelton in three sets in the last 16.
