Raipur: Zoya Mirza, a resident of Durg district of Chhattisgarh, created history by becoming a commissioned Lieutenant Doctor in the Indian Army after completing MBBS from AFMC (Armed Forces Medical College). He achieved this feat by completing his MBBS degree at the Armed Forces Medical College in 2023-24. The cut-off for girls in college is higher than that of boys. His success is the result of determination and a strong commitment to serve his country.

Grandma couldn’t see me wearing the uniform

A day before starting his duty in Jammu on Sunday, he has shared his struggles with our associate newspaper Times of India. Zoya Mirza told that I have been very smart in studies since childhood. Seeing my inclination towards studies, my grandmother wanted me to become a doctor and serve people. Unfortunately, she died a year ago and never got to see me wear the uniform.

Had to face financial constraints for studies

Zoya told that my family faced financial crunch, so my parents enrolled me in a less prestigious private school nearby to pay my fees. I studied there till I completed third grade. After that, they transferred me to KPS Bhilai, where I completed my education till class 12th.

Started studying for NEET in 12th itself

Zoya, who is studying Biology, started preparing for NEET exam during 12th, but she could not succeed. Disappointed with her results, she focused her attention on her graduate studies at Delhi University, where she was successful. Nevertheless, her grandmother and father convinced her to take a gap year and go to Kota to prepare for NEET.

Parents had to borrow money for my studies

Zoya Mirza, who became a lieutenant doctor in the army, said that by then my mother had started earning as a teacher in a government school and my father had started working as a pitch curator for the Chhattisgarh State Cricket Association. Still, my parents had to borrow money for my education. I went to Kota, but my confidence was shaken when I saw other students performing better than me in the practice tests.

Grandmother’s health deteriorated before NEET exam

He said that fifteen to twenty days before my NEET exam, I had to return home due to my grandmother’s serious health problems. Later, I returned to Kota for my second attempt. Sadly, I missed the opportunity to secure a seat by just one rank. Although my rank was 13th, the seat allotment ended at 12th. This made Zoya sad.

Grandma encouraged

My grandmother motivated me to take another chance at NEET and called me back to Bhilai, where I joined a coaching centre. Zoya told that the teachers of Bhilai, especially Iyer, Vikas and Saurabh helped a lot in maintaining her morale.

Becoming a doctor and joining the army is a great profession.

He further told that his grandmother and father often used to say that there are two great professions, to be a doctor and to be a soldier. By becoming a doctor I can serve the people and by joining the defense services I can serve the country. She said she considers herself fortunate to have received both opportunities.

opted for AFMC

Zoya told that in 2019, I passed NEET conducted by National Testing Agency for the first time with 622 marks and opted for AFMC. The cut-off score for female candidates in AFMC was 620, while for male candidates it was 600 marks. Completing the 4.5 year MBBS course at AFMC fulfilled his family’s dream.

He said unlike other colleges, AFMC conducts aptitude tests, English tests and medical examinations during counselling. Now, as I have got commission in the Indian Army, I can serve as a doctor and a soldier.

I always got my father’s support

Zoya’s father Shamim Mirza expressed his confidence in her ability to win any challenge. He added that her dedication and passion for helping others will have a positive impact on those she helps, whether they are in the armed forces or elsewhere.
