County Championship: Surrey beat Hampshire at Kia Oval as weather leads to draws | cricket news


Champions Surrey needed just 30.2 overs on the final day to seal an innings and 11-run victory over Hampshire in their Vitality County Championship clash at Kia Oval.

Dan Worrall finished impressively with 5-47 as Hampshire were bowled out for 151 in the first innings, before being bowled out again for 197 on the final day.

Ollie Pope equaled the Surrey record for most outfield catches in a first-class match, bagging three more at second slip to make it six and eight in the innings.

Surrey’s emphatic victory would have been completed within three days had it not been for the loss of a total of 84 overs due to bad weather on the second and third days, with the only seven-man match between the two divisions ending with a winner.

Essex’Nick Brown scored his first County Championship century in over a year and Callum Parkinson collected his first five-wicket haul. DurhamBut the weather-affected match at the Riverside ended in a draw.

Having scored 488 in the first innings and led by 130 runs, Essex tried their best to win on the final afternoon, but their efforts fell short as Alex Lees (48 not out in 128 minutes) led his side to 131 for two. At 4.40 pm when bad light stopped the game.

Other Section One Marks Lists

At Edgbaston, Warwickshire In reply they extended their first innings total to 361 NottinghamshireJake Bethel reached 400 runs with a career-best 93, shaking hands as the visitors stormed back in and reached 75-1.

Tom Lamonby continued his excellent start to the season and played a key role Somerset A hard-fought draw has earned the newly promoted WorcestershireHe crossed the 350 mark in the campaign with an unbeaten 81 and was part of a crucial fourth wicket partnership with Andrew Umid.

Somerset still needed 76 runs at 66-3 but they effectively slowed down the attack and batted throughout the afternoon, adding 117 from 39 overs.

Section Two Scoreboards

GloucestershireThe long wait for a win continued, as did the match against them Middlesex Despite starting the day where all three results were still possible at Bristol’s Seat Unique Stadium, the draw ended.

Middlesex declared on 449-7 in their second innings and set the home team a target of 339 to win in 58 overs on a hybrid pitch that offered little help to the bowlers, only for Gloucester to reach 127-3.

Australian Test batsman Peter Handscomb (99) and England all-rounder Rehan Ahmed (88) joined the team. Leicestershire Nose broke NorthamptonshireHope to bowl to victory abroad. In reply to Northamptonshire’s first innings, Leicestershire declared 452-8 in a weather-affected contest with 453-7 declared.
