The new high is the second best in a T20 match after Nepal’s 314-3 defeat of Mongolia at the Asian Games in Hangzhou last year.

The match produced the highest total for a T20 match with a total of 549 runs.

Virat Kohli and captain Faf du Plessis gave RCB a blistering start, with Dinesh Karthik scoring 83 off 35 balls as Bengaluru ended on 262-7.

Bangalore broke the backbone of the chase with five wickets between captain Pat Cummins and spinner Mayank Markande.

“A few weeks ago against Mumbai I thought it wouldn’t happen again, but it happened again,” Cummins said after his side’s third straight win and fourth of the season.

Batters ruled at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium as Hyderabad blasted the most sixes in an IPL innings, with 22 hits flying over the fence.

Head reached his century in 39 balls and the fourth-fastest century in the competition as he set the tone for the attack and was named man of the match.

He shared a 108-run opening partnership with Abhishek Sharma who scored 34 runs.

Australia’s match-winner Head hit nine fours and eight sixes in the final of the ODI World Cup in India last year.

After his departure Klaasen took charge with his 31-ball blitz. The South African was just as punishing as Head, smashing the ball to all parts of the field before being dismissed by Lockie Ferguson.

Fellow South African Aiden Markram and Indian hitter Abdul Samad scored 59 off 19 balls.

Samad hit England left-arm fast bowler Reece Topley for 25 runs in the 19th over for three fours and two sixes as he and Markram scored 21 runs from the final over.

Hyderabad scored 277-3 against Mumbai Indians at their home ground on March 27, surpassing Bengaluru’s 263-5 in 2013.

Earlier this month, Kolkata Knight Riders amassed 272-7 in a crushing 106-run victory over Delhi Capitals.

The in-form Kohli tried to set up the chase with a strong start as he hit six fours and two sixes in his 20-ball spell and continued the charge until Du Plessis’s exit.

A steep run chase saw wickets fall but Karthik again came up with a late onslaught to close the gap on second-placed Bengaluru, who slumped to their fifth straight defeat.

“One thing really is to refresh your mind, it’s a mental game,” Du Plessis said.

“Sometimes your mind feels like it’s going to explode. We’ve got a bit of an uphill task for now.”
