According to a report in Indian Express, the legal battle began on April 8 when Patiala-based Ishdeep Singh Randhawa filed a petition seeking a 'permanent injunction' and urging the court to stop the film's release. Randhawa's claim hinges on the assertion that Gurmail Kaur, Chamkila's first wife, sold exclusive rights to the biography to her late father Gurdev Singh, a prominent figure in the Punjabi film industry.

According to Randhawa, Gurmail Kaur earned Rs. 5 lakhs from his father in lieu of granting rights through a written agreement dated October 12, 2012. For him and his family.

This legal adventure is not entirely new. Randhawa had earlier filed a similar suit in the Ludhiana court, albeit with a different outcome. Last year, the case was finally dismissed as “withdrawn”.

According to the same report, lawyer Siddharth Sharma Tejas, lawyer for Window Seat Films and Reliance Entertainment, lawyer Ravinder Kumar Sharma said, “Refused to grant any injunction against the release of the film, the court adjourned and granted the petition. Time is right for filmmakers to submit their written feedback.

He said, “We have argued that the release of the film cannot be prevented as the matter does not lead to any copyright infringement and the agreement relied upon by the plaintiff is barred by the statutes of limitation and provisions of the Copyright Act. An order denying the injunction was published in open court. The court said there was no injunction, no urgency. The next date of hearing is May 6.

The film charts the untold true story of the original rockstar of Punjab's masses, the biggest record-selling artist of his time, who rose from the shadows of poverty and rose to the heights of popularity in the 80s due to the sheer power of his music. , angered many along the way, which eventually led to his assassination at the age of 27.

Starring Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra, Amar Singh Chamkila is Netflix's take on the vibrant life of a Punjabi musician. The movie will stream on Netflix from April 12, 2024
